1 For Caleb
We welcomed little "Caleb" into the world almost 6 weeks ago! One more nephew :) and the last grandkid unless I get some wild hair and decide to have more kidlets. Yikes!
I decided to make a little banner to hang above his crib using some Clear Scraps Mini Banner pages from one of their mini books. I had so much fun creating this banner!!!
I hooked the pages together with brass rings and tied loads of ribbon and chenille stems onto them. I layered on punched circles, felt accents, chipboard stickers, and buttons -- so love chunky full layers on projects!! I added rub-ons to two acrylic arrows to make them stand out from the acrylic pennants as accents. I inked the diecut chipboard letters by Pink Paislee with ColorBox Fluid Chalk Ink to make them match the papers I used. I sprayed the acrylic pennants with Smooch Spritz, painted them, inked them, and then splattered them with more acrylic paint. I had a blast!!!
Supplies:
Pennants, Arrows - Clear Scraps
Paper, Chipboard Diecuts - Bo Bunny Press
Rub-Ons - Cosmo Cricket
Alphas - Pink Paislee
Felt - Fancy Pants
Paint - Delta
Ink - Clearsnap, Tsukinenko
Ribbons, Buttons, Brass Rings, Sequins - hydrangeahippo.etsy.com

My sweet & talented friend Leah recently opened a shop on etsy offering her handmade (and gorgeous!) dupioni silk rings. We both are alumni of the Indie Biz courses with LeAnn of Freckled Nest and I am really excited to be able to share this part of Leah's creative journey with you.
I am so excited for Leah and to be sharing about her creations with you! The craftsmanship of Leah's rings is second to none and from assembly to packaging it is evident she is putting her heart and much thoughtfulness into each and every one of her creations. She is just fabulous all the way around!
About Leah:
Hello! I’m Leah! I have been blessed to find and marry my soulmate in this lifetime. We’re raising our two boys together in sunny south Florida, so my full time job is a mom. 0 Chicago Tourist.
And I ain't afraid to say it! I fell in love with Chicago--it was so clean compared to other major cities (*cough*LA, anyone?), the architecture was awesome, people friendly and helpful, lots to see and do, plenty of culture...I had a blast!! I cannot wait to return with my family for a vacation!!!
I had 3 days of Chicago adventure while I was in the city for the CHA show. I already told you abotu the first day with Karen Taylor and Sarah Mullanix!! So fun!!
Day 2 of adventure was with Katrina Hunt and Suzy West!!!! I was big chicken and did not bring my camera downtown on the train. Now I know better. I think I scared the bejesus out of Katrina when I told her to be careful with her camera walking around downtown! LOL I am from California, what can I say?!
We hopped the L Train from O'Hare to downtown and explored blocks and blocks of the city. We stopped at Garrett's for popcorn. I had been so good on my diet up until this point. That Suzy sure knows how to put the perr pressure on! LOL Actually, it was the smell of the popcorn. OMG it is making my mouth water even now!! Divine!! It was well worth cheating ;)
We hiked up to Cloud Gate, aka "the Bean", and got some pics, saw the Crown Fountain which was the coolest thing ever and then made our way to Willis Tower (formerly Sears) to visit the SkyDeck. We got out on the glass bump out things at the top of the building and got a photo. FREAKY.
Dinner at Giordano's was delish!! Deep dish pizza so yummy and filling I could only eat one piece. It was so fun to chat and eat and share together. We made our way back to the L and then "home".
And Day 3 was with the generous Betsy Burnett and her kidelts. We went to the Art Institue of Chicago, to the Bean again, and to Garrett's for me to get popcorn for the fam. They even took me to the airport!! So nice -- Betsy is the bestest :)
Isn't this Library so cool!? I love how these 100+ year old buildings are sprinkled between modern architecture. Beautiful!!
Betsy and I with Cloud Gate, aka "the Bean".
The Crown Fountain was very cool - I loved seeing all the kids playing in it.
Great art at the Art Institute -- boy, that building was a maze inside but we were able to find some gems like work by Picasso, Georgia O'Keefe, Matisse, and others.
This was both Betsy's and my favorite -- I didn't catch who did but I loved it!
They actually MOVED this Chicago Stock Exchange building and put it inside the museum. It was wonderful!
America Windows was gorgeous--way better than in these photos.
On the flight home, I met a wonderfully sweet lady and we chatted for hours. We just became Facebook friends. Guess what? She is from Chicago! So the people there really are nice. I had just the greatest time and cannot wait to go back.

0 CHA - Chicago July 19-21, 2011 - Trends
Yes, I am going out of order :) Here's what I thought was HOT, what the trends of the show were.
DIY and Customization were in! Here's what caught my eye:
Custom stamps-- I took a certification class with Photocentric, the makers of the Teresa Collins Stampmaker, on Sunday before the show and learned a ton! Not only can this machine create custom stamps from just about anything (including from diecuts), it can create stencils and embossing folders. It is on the forefront of the new "customization" trend. Here's a stamp we created in the class:
Epiphany Crafts had a strong show with even more new products to add to their line of custom button and epoxy tools. Rings, metal settings, charm settings, and new shapes were a HIT at the show!! I heard so many people talking about them, especially jewelry artists.
Dyeing and fabric also hit the booths. Lots of diecut and natural canvas pieces were available for you to ink, stamp, and mist to custom match your project. Tools for this, like masks were a BIG hit too -- Prima, Crafter's Workshop, Hampton Art, and Pink Paislee all released new stencils and masks for use with spray inks, paint, and more to create custom patterns on any surface.
Resin and Metal Shapes by Prima--paint ink, dye them whatever colors you want. The designers really showed any kind of media you could dream on these babies. I ordered the metal birdcages and the resin birds so we'll be using them in a class soon!!
Make it Yourself Jewelry - The Ruby Violet line by Prima is all about jewelry pieces you can mix and match to create stunning cabochon style necklaces for under $10. The kits can also be taken apart and used to embellish mini books, altered art, and home decor. I LOVE this!!
Another Trend: Mini stuff is BIG! My Little Shoebox, October Afternoon, and Cosmo Cricket already had mini alpha stickers (and released new ones in new colors) but they were everywhere in much bigger ( and smaller) ways. KaiserCraft had the teeniest alphas by far!! I think they are not even 1/8"tall!! Echo Park and Crate Paper included tiny alphas as part of their 12x12 sticker sheets and Authentique released more sheets of small alphas to go with their new lines. Prima also had a nice assortment of tiny alpha stickers!! I ordered these ones:
Clover's Kanzashi Flower templates were the talk of the show -- use small scraps of fabric, crepe paper, or dictionary paper to make custom, handmade flowers with loads of character and dimension. We are so using these in some classes!!!!
Scrap Bands is another company all about customization. They even won an award as a CHA Top 20 Pick! These elastic bands wrap around your 12x12 album to help keep it closed. The removable decorative sleeve can be customized to your theme. Even brads go through it! I got one at the show can cannot wait to play!!
Another trend was FAST scrapping. Simple Stores had a line of papers that were designed to help you scrap quickly using divided scrap pages. American Crafts added to their line of divided scrap pages but also released some pre-sewn travel journals by Amy Tan. We're going to use those in a class soon!
And a final trend was Jewel Tones. I loved the rich magentas, sapphires, emeralds, and topazes in new papers from Crate Paper (Random Collection), American Crafts (Margarita line), and more. New inkpads by Clearsnap under the ColorBox label with Stephanie Barnard has wonderfully jewel-ish colors!
That is CHA in a nutshell :) Will have more pics tomorrow!
