2 Inspiration Friday -----Ideas for Scrapbookers Guest Post: Waterfall Ruffle

I'm so excited to be a guest contributor to Ideas for Scrapbookers today!! I chose to use one of Pammy's awesome templates, Curvy Photoblock Template 2, as a base for my layout.

Here's the template:
And my interpretation, a little bit of a vertically mirrored version of the template:

Ruffles are definitely "in" -- just look at the Summer CHA sneak peeks from Maya Road, Bo Bunny, and other manufacturers, all releasing ruffled ribbons. I acheived a similar look to ruffles by just using paper. I like to call this little technique the "waterfall ruffle" because it looks like falling water if you adhere the ruffle across the middle of the page.

All you need to create this look is a scrap of paper about 5" x 8.5" (or whatever length you want your ruffle to be), scissors, and a project to use it on.

I've cut my scrap into a curve on one edge so that my final ruffle will be along a curved edge, following the curvy edge of the template.

Snip into the edge of the paper, about 1" to 2" long cuts, all along the edge of the paper. The cuts should make sections of paper that are between 1/2" to 1.5" wide.

Curl the cut strips up. Then gently roll the strips into little tubes.

After the strips have all been rolled up as desired, attach the ruffle to your layout. I like to use it under photos so that it peeks out a little. Here's my finished layout with the ruffle attached and some yellow fabric trim and aqua pearl trim tucked under the waterfall ruffle.

On the "Guitar" layout below, I used a straight strip of patterned paper, about 4" x 12", to create the waterfall ruffle instead of a curved strip.

And here's another sample. I cut into the edges of a 12x12 Donna Salazar Artistic Paper and curled the edges up. Then I attached some of the Donna Salazar "Kiss the Cook" paper to the edges I had rolled into a ruffle to make the page 12x12 again. I then inked the ruffles and the edges of the papers with chalk ink to pull it all together.

Hope you're into the mood to start ruffling :) This technique would be really fun to make waves on a beach page, perfect for summer!

0 One more for Epiphany Crafts

I am really excited that I am on the new Epiphany Crafts Design Team! I love the Shape Tools and the little Bubble Caps that go on top -- so easy to customize any page, like this last one I made for their booth at CHA:

I punched the little girls and boys out of some October Afternoon paper using the tools and *poof*! They are instant embellies! This page is really simple and I just love the way the shapes look on it.

Supplies:
Paper - Collage Press, October Afternoon, Cosmo Cricket
Shape Tool and Shape Caps - Epiphany Crafts
Twine - Hydrangeahippo.etsy.com
Sticker - Cosmo Cricket
Staples - Swingline

So now that my samples are at CHA, I thought there wasn't much else to be excited about. But there IS!! Have you seen the Epiphany Crafts catalog? I am in LOOOOVE with the new Vintage Snap Settings!!! Sooo cute and how about making custom cabochons and charms?!?!

And to top it all off, Epiphany Crafts is the winner of the CHA Exhibiting with Excellence Award! Wow! So if you haven't checked out all that Epiphany Crafts has to offer, you'd better go see what all the buzz is about :) To get the latest news, you can join their Facebook fan page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Epiphany-Crafts/138008244814?ref=ts#!/pages/Epiphany-Crafts/138008244814?ref=ts

2 Christmas in July: Noel

Don't forget to join in on the BLOG HOP here:

http://hydrangeahippo.blogspot.com/2010/07/christmas-in-july-blog-hop.html

A few years ago I started making banners, right when they were really getting trendy again (cuz Lord knows they are not something "new" or exclusive to scrapbooking). I've taught banner classes, sold them, sold kits, and even created custom banners that I sold for hundreds of dollars on etsy. The beauty of banners is they can be any style, any shape, any color..the sky is the limit! And they are a great way to make any space more festive for your favorite occasion or just for everyday. I love banners over the mantle or across a window at Christmas. You can even put them in your tree!

Here's a banner I made using Donna Salazar's new "Weathered Winter" paper collection:

You can create a holiday themed banner using embellishments and other products leftover from other projects. Your banner should reflect your style so using items from your stash will easily help you create a banner you'll like (since you probably like all the embellies you've got). And you don't need expensive stuff to put on your banner either. Here's each letter of the banner I made and I'll explain the embellishments I used:

Let me also tell you that I only used TWO sheets of paper for this banner and each pennant is 9" tall!! So a little paper goes long way on this project.

On the "N" and "E" I made rosettes from crepe paper and dipped the edges in glitter. Easy peasy! And you can get crepe paper all year long in the party supplies section of most large stores like Target. I love to hit the clearance sales after Christmas to find deasl on ornaments that I can use as scrapbooking embellishments. I got these felt snowflakes from a gift shop that was clearing them out around Christmas time. I used them for a class and had about 5 leftover so 3 made their way onto the banner!

I had some leftover canvas fabric so I diecut it into scalloped circles to use as mats for the O and L pennants of the banner. I crumpled a doily and putt hat in the center of the canvas circle--nothing is off limits! Just make sure you stick to the basic color scheme and it all works somehow.

I used an assortment of bulky buttons as accents on this pennant. I have so many buttons that I love but they are just too bulky for my regular scrapbook pages--a project like this is perfect to use them on because the bulk does not matter and I actually get to look at my yummy buttons while the banner is displayed. You can even use buttons that have a special meaning to you, like buttons from grandma's apron, and they will remind you of grandma every time you display the banner.

I had some lacquered holly leaves and berries leftover from old projects -- they were perfect for this! I also used some eyelet lace on the edges of each pennant for a more homespun, vintage feel. Again, the pattern and type of lace does not matter -- just match the color.

And finally I used some more buttons - repetition really helps pull it all together when creating a project like this!

I want to explain a little about the letters I used too. I bet you can tell that I used my Silhouette Diecutting machine to cut the letters but did you know that I cut them from Donna Salazar's new canvas paper? She now has BLANK canvas paper -- it comes in a cream color and is very stiff and thick. I cut the letters out and then spritzed them with water and then Smooch Spritz in Limolicious. The reason I sprayed the paper with water FIRST is to help the spray ink spread out over the paper instead of being in splattery dots. I dried the letters with a heat gun (necessary because of all the water I sprayed on the paper) and inked them with Chestnut Roan and Warm Green Colorbox Chalk Inks. Some American Crafts Foam Dots popped the letters up on each pennant. What I love about this canvas paper is that is it is really paper, not fabric, so I can cut it, mist it, and diecut it, but it is also stiff enough to act like chipboard when I need it to.

Hope this inspires you to use everyday items in a Christmas color scheme to make something wonderful for your holiday home!

Happy Crafting!

2 While Donna's At CHA, Let's Play!

Don't forget to join in on the BLOG HOP here:

http://hydrangeahippo.blogspot.com/2010/07/christmas-in-july-blog-hop.html

Donna Salazar is on her way to CHA so while she's gone, let's play! Head on over to the Facebook Group for Donna Salazar Products for your chance to win her new releases, before they are even in stores!!

Here's how you get to the Group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=472088525511 So join up on the Group!

And now, for the last of the samples I created using Donna's new lines for CHA:

"Family"
One of the great things about Donna's Mosaic papers is that they have miniature versions of the papers on them. On this page I used the corner from the 12x12 paper from the "Kiss the Cook" paper line in one corner of the page and the matching Mosaic on the other corner--perfecto!

"Silly Girl"
This layout is super simple as far as supplies--Smooch Spritz, Donna Salazar Blank Artistic Paper and some scraps from the Weathered Winter Journal Cards, and a sheet of black cardstock. The rest is well, a secret since I'm doing this one in a class soon :)

"Curious"
I had been spraying Smooch Spritz on something else and it pooled on my table and got on these tags, SO I dragged the tags through the ink that was on the table and let them dry. Then I cut some letters from Donna's Artistic Paper and painted those with Smooch. A little tearing and layering and there's a page!

"By The Sea"
When Donna first showed me this paper, the white wood planks on it made me think whitewash and beach. So I did it--I used a Christmas themed paper to do a beach layout! I also printed my photo with my super cruddy document printer (it does not do photos at all) on another piece of paper from Donna's Weathered Winter (Christmas) line. It has a wonderful shabby chic effect!! The waves are Smooch Spritz on Artistic Paper (Donna Salazar) and the stars are also from the Weathered Winter line. Diecuts were done with Sizzix and Silhouette.

"Favorite Christmas Recipes"
Another recipe book! This one is Christmas paper on the outside but I used the Recipe Cards from the "Kiss the Cook" line. I also used Zutter Corrugated Cardboard and O-Wires. Love my Bind It All!!

"Recipes" Mini Book
Another mini book!! On this one I used Zutter's new Zutter Ds -- they are really cool D Shaped rings that clip onto O-Wires so you can hang your books. They work great with the Hang-It-Alls but here I used it as a way to hang my book. I figured this recipe book would be fun to hang on a pantry doorknob or on my apron hook (with my apron) in my kitchen. The best part is, the Ds don't interfere with turning the pages in the book like tying the ribbon around the binding would. Genius! I also used some Vintage Bingo Cards as pages and cut icons from Donna's "Kiss the Cook" Mosaics to use as bingo markers on the cards.

I cannot believe how much I got done in two weeks for all my CHA assignments! Here's the totals between what I created for Donna Salazar and Epiphany Crafts:

Layouts: 14
Mini Books : 3
Altered Tin: 1
Altered Spools: 4
Banners: 2
Now, that's alot of scrap! LOL Hope you enjoyed seeing all my CA projects over the last week or so. Now I can't wait to start doing classes!! Many of these layouts and projects are definitely going to be incorporated into classes.

Happy Scrapping!
